Snowed-In

Phoebe and I were snowed-in for Christmas.

We’d been planning on travelling down to Boston to stay with her parents. They were quite liberal, one a former professor at MIT, the other a campaign worker for local legislators. They were so unlike my own folks, born-again Christians who couldn’t stand my lesbian lifestyle with Phoebe.

We’d met while I was doing graduate work up in Maine, working on bird migratory patterns at the northernmost wildlife refuges in the state. She’d been up there on an extended vacation after breaking up with her long-time boyfriend, Martin.

They’d been together since she herself had finished graduate school two years earlier. The plan was for them to get married, her to move to New York with him, and to live the American dream of white picket fences, two cars in the garage, and the obligatory two-point-five children.

Well, something happened along the way…mainly Martin’s wandering dick. Phoebe had walked in on him in their own bed, him and a twenty-something undergrad he’d been mentoring in art nouveau history or some such nonsense.

Phoebe had moved out right away, back into her parents’ house, and then up to Maine to stay at the cabin of some family friends. We met while she was out walking one day and I was collecting samples.

We started off as friends, just taking long walks to talk. She vented about Martin and I just listened. When the time was right, I leaned in for a kiss. She was surprised, but curious. That led to making out and then later that night – after two bottles of wine – I got her into bed.

That was over six months ago. Long enough for the both of us to feel comfortable with a visit to the folks. I have to admit – Phoebe was a lot more comfortable with it than I. I’d met parents before. On the surface it always seemed to go well. Then a few days later the phone call would come. I’d typically be dumped a short time later.

“That won’t happen with me, I promise,” she told me. I wanted to believe her, I really did.

I put all I had into our lovemaking the night before the trip. I wanted her to remember how good it felt, my tongue on her and in her. I wanted it to take away from whatever scorn lay behind her mother and father’s eyes. We were going at it with such passion that we never noticed the snow starting to come in.

By morning it was clear the plows weren’t going to make it and that we wouldn’t be heading down to Boston after all.

“Mom and dad will be so disappointed,” Phoebe had said, a sly smile darting across her lips.

“Yeah…I’ll bet,” I replied drolly, knowing they’d probably be happier never knowing the lesbian their daughter was shacking-up with. I’d been in enough relationships with ‘straight’ girls to know that they didn’t last long, that they usually couldn’t be turned. I figured my time with Phoebe would be about the same – short and sweet with just as sudden of an end.
